2016-11-12

Marquette nabs first win as new franchise

A strong offense set the tone for the Marquette Mutineers as they defeated the Eagle River Falcons 10-6 Saturday night.

Eleven different Mutineers had a point in the victory, led by Dallas McLaughlin’s four goals. Austin Cline added two goals and two assists while four others found the back of the net.

McLaughlin started the scoring for Marquette as he received a breakout pass from Kyle Parsons with 11:35 to go in the first period. Eagle River responded quickly with their first of the season courtesy of Lucas Otto. The Falcons took a 2-1 lead into the middle period.

In the second, Marquette took the lead for good, thanks to four goals scored by Adam Szabo, McLaughlin, Cline and John Aho. Eagle River clawed back in the third scoring two goals in two minutes, but McLaughlin ended that surge with 4:26 remaining as he netted the hat trick.

Special teams were strong for the Mutineers, going 2 for 7 on the man advantage and adding a 4-on-4 goal. They killed 3 of 4 penalties.

Cline doubled the score with a high dump in from behind the red line on the exchange. The puck sneaked between six of the local state championship banners just to bounce in for the final score.

Brett Beaudry stopped 35 of 41 shots in the win for Marquette while his counterpart Jake Arno stopped 28 of 38 shots on the night.

With the win, Marquette moves to 1-0 on the new season. Eagle River moves to 0-1. Both teams will wrap up their series tomorrow night in Eagle River. Puck drops at 8 p.m. Central time.
