The Marquette Mutineers split their road two-game series with the Mosinee (Wisc.) Papermakers, losing 10-5 on Friday, Nov. 25 and winning 8-6 on Saturday, Nov. 26. The Mutineers improve to 4-1 on the season after the weekend and move into sole possession of first place in the Great Lakes Hockey League.

“To be in first place this early in the season is awesome,” forward captain Joey Enright said. “We’ve really been clicking as a team and we’re going to keep on moving together to stay at the top of the GLHL.”

The Papermakers started the weekend off strong, jumping out to a 4-1 lead after the first period. Marquette fought back in the third period to 6-4 and later 8-5 deficits but Parker Tomczyk added two empty-net goals to seal the victory for the home team and the first loss for the Mutineers.

Forwards Joey Enright and Ryan Sullivan led the team in points on Friday night with three each. Forward Dallas McLaughlin added two goals. Ryan Daust, Brandon Smaby and Andrew Plomer added an assist in the loss.

Mosinee was led by forward Greg Hanson, who had a goal and four assists and former Wisconsin Badger Chase Drake added four assists. Ten different ’Makers had a point in their home opener.

“We got to make sure we have good (defensive) zone coverage out there. They’re just getting too many shots,” Plomer said. “Our goalie saw too many shots out there and we got to make sure we’re covering their points.”

Saturday night went back and forth all game with neither team having a two-goal lead until the final two seconds of the contest. Mosinee’s Tom Lentz scored a rebound goal just 51 seconds into the contest but Marquette forward Craig Hartz responded with a rebound goal of his own with eight minutes to go in the period. Both teams added in another goal to end the first 2-2.

The Papermakers used a power play to break the tie just 2:03 into the second period, courtesy of Tomczyk, Drake and Alex Racino rotating the puck well in the zone during the man advantage. The two teams then exchanged two goals each until the final 32 seconds of the period when McLaughlin took a Chris Freeborn pass across the blue line for an impressive breakaway goal to retie the game at five goals each.

Forward Zach Comfort broke the tie for the sixth time with a rebound goal with 15 minutes to go in regulation. Marquette regrouped to score the game’s final three goals, courtesy of Sullivan and McLaughlin twice.

“This was a huge win,” Hartz said. “We came out to play a solid game and when we were down we never gave up.”

Mike Madosh tended the net for Marquette in both games. He had 40 saves on Friday and 59 on Saturday for a combined 99 of 113 saves. His record improves to 2-1.

Marquette continues their road trip next Friday at the West Bend Bombers (3-1) and Saturday at the Fond du Lac Bears (3-1). Mosinee (1-1) will compete with the Fox Cities Ice Dogs (2-3) in a home-and-home series for the Paper Cup.
