2017-01-12

Preview the series for Friday and Saturday

The Marquette Mutineers (6-5-0) are all set for a home-and-home series with their closest geographic rivals: the historic Portage Lake Pioneers (4-3-1). First game will be in Dee Stadium in Houghton on Friday, Jan. 13 at 8 p.m. while both teams will return to Marquette on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 8 p.m..

LAST TIME OUT
Friday Box Score   -   Saturday Box Score
The Mutineers split their last series with the Eagle River Falcons with a 9-3 win on Friday, Jan. 6 and a 9-8 loss on Saturday, Jan. 7.
Friday's night game was quiet to start until a fight broke out between Marquette forward Joey Enright and Eagle River's Neil Wallace near the end of the second period. The Mutineers responded well after losing their captain by scoring six unanswered goals for the win.
Eagle River came out swinging on Saturday night, scoring three goals in the first four minutes. Marquette put up four goals in the third period, but Alex Hauswirth scored the game winner for the Falcons to prevent the comeback.
Forward Ryan Sullivan led the way for Marquette, notching a hat trick both nights. He broke his personal best point total with five total points in Saturday's loss. Forward Dallas McLaughlin had six points on the weekend, increasing his GLHL-leading point total to 35. Defenseman Levi Jezek also scored his first goal in 1.5 seasons in the league.
They were the first games back in four weeks after a long holiday break and the first games at home in almost two months.

SERIES RECAP
The Portage Lake Pioneers won the only previous matchup between these two team, a 6-3 victory on Dec. 9. A very unusual game, as four of the nine total goals were scored on slow rolling pucks trickling into the net or a rebound where the goalie was knocked down. McLaughlin scored first while forward Bud Bradley scored twice in a minute during a 4-on-4.

FAMILIAR FACES
Both teams will recognize former teammates on the other bench.
Sullivan and goaltenders Mike Madosh and Brett Beaudry all played multiple seasons with the Pioneers, including a 2016 GLHL Tournament Championship. The Pioneers picked up forward Neeco Bellanger and goaltender Tony Kyto this year, both who played with the Marquette Iron Rangers last season.
