Calumet Wolverines Host Mutineers In UP Showdown

2017-01-26

Marquette travels back to the Keweenaw for a two-game series

The Marquette Mutineers (7-7) and the Calumet Wolverines  (7-8) will play in a two-game series at the Calumet Colosseum this Friday and Saturday Jan. 27-28.

ALL TIME SERIES
This is the first time that the Wolverines and Mutineers will play each other. Calumet is the second to last team to play Marquette for the first time. Next week the DePere Deacons will travel to Lakeview Arena and the Mutineers will have played everyone in the GLHL at least once.

LAST TIME OUT
The Mutineers lost 7-4 against the West Bend Bombers on Saturday, Jan. 21.
Marquette came out fast, scoring three goals in the first period only to allow seven unanswered to the Bombers.
Six Mutineers recorded a point, led by forward Ryan Sullivan with a goal and two assists. Forward Mike Peterson also had a multi-point night with a goal and an assist.
Brandon Knopp stopped 45 of 52 in his first loss of the season.
Marquette is now 2-3 in their last five games with a +1 goal differential in that span.

SPARKING THE OFFENSE
Marquette still has the GLHL's top offense, scoring six goals a game. However, they've had six goals or less in their last three contests.
The Mutineers have been rotating points on the other lines. Only five skaters Sullivan, Peterson, Austin Cline, Dallas McLaughlin and Joey Enright have double digit point totals. But through 14 games, every skater has at least one point.
McLaughlin leads the GLHL with 25 goals and 40 points, but has been out with an upper-body injury sustained during the game against Portage Lake on Jan. 14. He is questionable for this series.

RARE SPECIAL TEAMS CHANCES
Both the Wolverines and Mutineers are in the top half of the GLHL for penalties. Calumet is second with 6.93 PIM per game while Marquette is fourth at 10.36 PIM per game.
The other Michigan franchise Portage Lake leads the league with 6.83 PIM per game while Depere is third with 9.36 PIM per game.

IT TAKES SOME "GUTS"
The Calumet Colosseum recently received a grant to install a new informational kiosk about hockey and GUTS Frisbee. During the games this weekend, there will be some information about the kiosk and GUTS Frisbee in the area. When the Wolverines come to Marquette in February, the Marquette GUTS Frisbee group will also have a table available.
