Hockey Featured in Marquette History Center's Sports Hero Day

2017-02-16

Hockey, local heroes, interactive exhibits and more are featured at this event held during the UP 200 weekend.

The Marquette Regional History Center will be showcasing a special "Sports Heroes" day on Saturday, Feb. 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Live presentations will begin at noon.

According to MRHC Museum Educator Betsy Rutz, this program follows the museum's ideals of featuring influential citizens in the community.

"It turns out that many of these (influential) citizens are athletes," Rutz said. "Athletes in our region inspire young folks to be active, join a team and give back by often coaching and mentoring those young athletes."

The event coincides with the UP 200, the largest sled-dog race in the Lower 48. As the racers are coming back from the turnaround point in Grand Marais, fans can learn about many new sports figures from Marquette.

The hockey part of the show will include a computer kiosk with historical moments available. Hockey stars Jerry Sullivan and Patty Nebel will also speak at the event.

Also speaking will be 1951 Winter Carnival Queen Kay Hultgren Freeman, To win her title, she competed in ice skating, skiing and public speaking at one of the different carnivals held throughout the U.P..

Tickets are available for $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, $3 for students and $2 for youth 12 and under. For more information, visit the Facebook page for the event HERE.
