Seven Ways To Celebrate Hockey Week In America That Benefits Marquette

2017-02-22

Celebrate Hockeyville USA as the nation rallies around

This week is the tenth annual Hockey Week Across America, a creation of USA Hockey for the sport we love. As we are halfway through the week, the Mutineers are here with some great ways to help you celebrate in Hockeyville USA these next couple of days!

1) Vote NMU defenseman Brock Maschmeyer for the Senior Class Award

The Senior Class Award is one of NCAA's most prestigious independent awards, celebrating outstanding players for their excellence in the four C's: Classroom, Character, Community and Competition. Maschmeyer is up for the award alongside nine other amazing hockey players across the country.
Maschmeyer is a leader for the Wildcats on and off the ice and comes from a strong hockey family. His full nomination bio is available HERE.
Fans can vote every day online at the Senior Class voting website HERE for up to three players. There is no bad selection for who to vote for the other two spots beside Maschmeyer, but two come from fellow WCHA schools and two come from military universities.

2) Donate to help the Eagle Mine Bantam B team on their state championship push

For the first time in 14 years, a house team has fought through the district process to earn a shot at a state title. They already have a midseason tournament championship this year and have a record of 30-7-3. Hopefully, these great players can bring home another title.
As of publication, the GoFundMe page set up to help with travel costs raised $2,130 of their $3,800 goal. If you would like to donate, visit their fundraising page HERE.

3) Root on NMU women's club team as they head to their conference tournament

The NMU women's club team has quietly been Marquette's most successful team the last couple years, as they have three-peated as CCWHA D2 conference regular season champions and won the conference tournament last season. The Wildcats have made two straight ACHA National Championship appearances and lost a heartbreaking 2OT semifinal game last year.
NMU was ranked #1 in the ACHA West regional through the first three rankings of the year and hold a record of 15-3-2. The nation's leading scorer plays for NMU, Negaunee's own Allison Carlson, with 69 goals and 30 assists for 99 points. Goalie Devin Christian and forwards Katie Pryor, Carlie Kangas and Syd Higgins all come from the UP as well.
Northern's last games before the final ranking period is this weekend at the CCWHA conference tournament where they will play Aquinas, Michigan State and host Notre Dame in a round robin before the championship game on Sunday. A championship would guarantee a third-straight bid to ACHA Nationals. Follow along on their Facebook page HERE and their Twitter handle HERE to support the NMU women's club team and to let them know that Marquette is backing them!

4) Contact Marquette Junior Hockey and Friends of Lakeview Arena and say "thank you"

As the hockey season starts to round up, the push for offseason organization, extra volunteers and donations are starting to be more and more crucial.
Not everyone can throw down cash at a moment's notice, but sometimes an encouraging word and an offer to volunteer can provide an emotional boost to the people that have worked so hard so far.
Many of these volunteers are overworked and underappreciated, so on behalf of the Mutineers we can't thank you enough for stepping up with the concession stands, the organization and infrastructure to help the youth of our community continue to play, for helping grow our arena now and in the future and for everything else you do. You're all awesome.
If you want to say thank you, stop by the Marquette Junior Hockey office in Lakeview or visit the Facebook page of Friends of Lakeview Arena HERE.

5) Brush up on local hockey history

Marquette has a rich history of hockey, but when was the last time you stopped to appreciate it?
If it's been too long, stop by the Hockey History Hallway at Lakeview to learn about all of the former teams that played in our community. Special tributes to the first professional female hockey player in North America Karen Koch, the famous Hanson/Carlson Brothers, the namesake of North America's third oldest trophy Doc Gibson and more are enshrined here as well.
If you have an opportunity, check out the Marquette Regional History Museum as well. Last Saturday, they hosted a "Sports Heroes Day", celebrating not just hockey greats from the UP but so many other athletic leaders. Some of that information was from permanent exhibits, so the MRHM is a great resource to brush up on hockey history in Marquette.

6) Root on players in the Betty Beckman Tournament

This weekend is the 31st annual Betty Beckman Tournament, played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Around since 1986, kids eight and under have been able to play in their own tournament right here in Marquette. Thirty different teams from all around the region will faceoff in cross-ice and half-ice games for these Mites.
Volunteers and fans are needed for this great event to not only make sure that the tournament is held on time but also to celebrate the great work these young players achieve. A good fan base supports every player and team, so we hope to see you there doing just that!

7) Support your Marquette Mutineers at Lakeview Arena

The Mutineers will be hosting the Calumet Wolverines both Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m..
After two rough games on the road, Marquette returns home for their final seven games of the season. Holding onto a 10-9 record and fifth place in the GLHL, a big weekend sweep would be just what the Mutineers need to start off the last quarter of the season.
The Mutineers currently hold onto the league's top offense and have three players with 30 points or more. They'll need all the offense they can muster against an underrated Wolverines team who come in hot after a big 4-3 rivalry win on Tuesday night against the Portage Lake Pioneers.
